The word culture means so much more than what meets the eye, and Spain and Portugal’s unique cultures are the impressive result of years of influence from the numerous empires that have ruled the area. The Greeks called the ancient inhabitants Iberians, which most likely was a name derived from the Ebro River (Iberus). Then Celts, Visigoths and around 3,000 years ago the Phoenicians started building trading ports. Power shifted many times, most notably to the Romans and Muslims, and finally to the Catholic monarchy in the 1400s that sent Christopher Columbus on his famous voyage

The Iberian Peninsula has served as a crossroads of civilizations for many centuries. Geographically, its strategic location links Western Europe to North Africa and connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean and the new world beyond. The Peninsula is separated from the rest of Europe by the Pyrenees mountain range, which forms a land barrier in the northeast.

The southernmost point is separated from North Africa by the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. The north and west coasts are hugged by the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea washes upon the southern and eastern shores. The peninsula itself also forms continental Europe’s most westerly point at Cape Roca, in Portugal.
